Windows Tweaks - Win7 & Win10

Hi Guys,

Is there a new updated Windows Tweaking List from Dataton HQ ?

It would be Great to have one for Windows 7 and Windows 10

On the other hand,

Does anyone have any Tweaks that they performed themselves ? it would be great to hear about how it worked for you here.

Best

Percy

Hi Percy!

You are right, at the moment there is no official Dataton tweak list for Windows 10.

But it will be.

Cannot commit to a due date. But it is not 2018, and not so close that I´d hold my breath. ;)

Best regards,
David / Dataton

Hi Guys,

...

Since you asked, I have been running Win10 Pro OEM on Display PC for a few months now. My Win 10 is updated up to v1607 (Anniversary Update), and disconnected from the net since. However, my laptop's Win 10 is up to date with all updates as of today, used as a Prodn PC and have not had much problems except one, mentioned below.

Win 10 as Prodn PC

This is a laptop using the free upgrade from Win 7. Version is Win 10 Home Single Language 64-bit with all auto updates as Microsoft sees fit.

No problems with Watchout 6.1.x and the 6.1.2 beta 16 except in Remote Access of another Win 10 Pro Display PC. Needs to 're-launch' Watchpoint via the remote access after accessing otherwise Watchpoint runs but with a black screen(s). A re-launch solves the problem. This does not happen with remote accessing Win 7 Pro Display PCs.

Win 10 Pro OEM as a Display PC v1607

Basic PC specs: ASRock Z270M Pro4 with i7-7700 (I screwed up the K version trying to manually de-lid it), 128GB PNY SSD for OS, 512GB Samsung SM951 M.2 on PCIe Adapter for Watchpoint data, Firepro W4100, Noctua NH-L12 Air Cooling with single fan, 450w SFX power supply, all in a 19" 2U chassis.

Surprisingly, very little tweaking of Win 10 is required to operate it as a Display PC if you do not mind the multitude of apps that comes with the OS. One could of course run through the Start Menu, right-click on any app you do not want or do not intend to use, and if allowed, delete/uninstall it. Some apps do not allow un-installation, but I have not had a problem with them being present in the PC maybe because the Display PC has never been online since initial install and updates (before Creator's Updates).

Standard stuff to disable, of course, are the Firewall and Auto Update of OS, and manual setting of IPV4 Address.

Windows Defender can be disabled, but it will enable itself later or after a re-start. I understand, there is a procedure via Command Prompt as Admin to disable it but I did not venture that way, and let Defender run to see if it interferes. I did set Defender not to run in real time though. So far no problems, no interference with Watchpoint running, over an hour long test show/loop more than once.

For initial installation from a CD, I performed the following actions -

1. Choose Customise setup (not Express Settings)

2. Turn off all :

- Personalization

- Connectivity and error reporting

- Browser, protection and update (especially Smartscreen)

3. When Cortana pops up, answer 'Not now'

4. Thereafter, proceed as normal/auto.

Note: Steps 2 and 3 above can be done after install one by one, but doing it here is easier.

Edit 1: forgot to add that in multi-monitor mode, the Task Bar by default appears on all displays. You can set it to Monitor 1 only in the multi-monitor settings.

Edit 2: Win 10 boots up really fast, IMO, at least 3 times faster than Win 7 even with the disparity between an i7-7700 (Win 10), and an i7-6800K (Win 7). I notice this with my laptop too, an i5. And network connectivity seems to have gone to the top of the boot process in priority versus Win 7. However, I have not checked out how this affects the amount of delay to startup Watchpoint in an autostart situation.

Thanks for the information Thomas,,, Appreciate it.

Thanks David.

It would be great to get something preliminary for Win 10, i understand it would take more time.
How about Maybe an updated one for Win 7 ? This would help a lot of us im sure.

Thanks either ways.

Hi Percival,

at the moment our full focus is to get as good as possible tweaks with Windows 10. And I am quite certain we will not re-focus our energy on a no longer available version of Windows - at least until we have the Win10 tweak list available.

And we cannot go public with anything unless it is fully tested since we know our guides will be used by many people.

So we have to ask for a bit more patience.

Best regards,

David

To get you started with win 10 tweaking there are essential tools I can recommend:

1. Ultimate Windows Tweaker:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-4-windows-10

While you can do all these Tweaks in der Registry and through different commands this software takes a lot of the work away from you.

2. http://winaero.com/download.php?view.1832

This removes Cortana from your PC. It will eventually also stop your search function from working but this should be deactivated anyway.

3. http://apps.codigobit.info/2015/08/win-x-privacy-helper.html

This will remove even more unwanted Win 10 applications.

We are currently testing Win 10 Pro for Workstation as this will be the system which gets delivered with workstations from the big vendors from now on and in the future and which might get the most attention from Microsoft for our field of applications. However this will cost you arround 200€ for an upgrade or 440€ if you just buy it alone... And there are 2 Versions of it. Max 4 Processors and more than 4 Processor Cores. Still waiting for the delivery of some parts for the next generation machines to be able to test the new win...

We are getting there. At the moment we are looking into any pitfalls related to Microsoft End User License Agreements and other legal issues by making such a list available for Windows 10. We want to make sure we are on the right side of the legal fence.

David, why don’t you provide a “preliminary” tweaking list? Stating clearly that it contains the findings so far, and marking any uncertain parts in red / italic / underlined script? I’m certain this will help out the previous respondent getting his system out of the disaster zone, don’t you agree?

I understand and respect your take on wanting to provide a bulletproof document, but perhaps that is never going to happen anyway (because of the ongoing changes in and different versions of win10)

My two cents...

Hi, Walter!

We would love to do that.
But, it is the LEGAL part that we need to sort out - not the technical. And that is not something naming it "preliminary" will help on. But we are getting there! :)

I abandoned Windows 10 and was able to force Windows 7 onto the rigs.   It worked first time and has not failed yet.  I did not have to force EDID, remote access works, everything.

No Windows 10 until they release a tweak list, I say.

Completely agree with you. I have had the same problems as you.
I will not return to Win10 on my display computer until we have that list.
Many wasted hours of work for a compatibility failure.
A greeting!!

Windows 10 is a disaster. I tried to upgrade Windows 10, but the situation was not encouraging.
Windows 10 doesn't seem to allow that ,I wasted a lot of time on bypass password because i forgot my login password on Windows, i tried many tools like ntpassword, Wingeeek or labwin or ophcrack but don't know which one is the best?

is there any other tools i can choose?  i need free app.

As written in few postings before I have a very high success with using Win 10. We are building machines for over a year now (Win 8.1 before) with it and the performance increased a lot.

To be honest. Yes it was a long and hard way to go there. But I dont wont to miss it anymore! Using a Win 7 machines feels like a time travel now.

The easier way and of course the more expensive way is to use Win 10 LTSB. Still you need to tweak it but the starting position is much better then with Win 10 Pro.

If you are based in Europe send me a PN and I can tell you where and how to get it if you dont have a dealer for it. Its not simply offered in a online store but Im happy to help!
