w7100 vs Asus HD7970

Recommended Posts

Im putting together my new systems, and currently use the w7100 with EVGA DP hubs to get 6 sync'd outs.  Have been seeing a lot of threads about the Asus HD 7970 and it is drastically cheaper.  I was hoping someone could share some insight on the 7970, does it support sync'd outputs? any red flags to know about? my systems are road systems that travel for Large Scale A/V staging and reliability is a must.

thanks,

No, it does not support a S400 framelock/genlock card.

any red flags to know about?

Apart from not being available anymore?

- a heavy card, makes it a bit risky in a touring PC.

- occupying three PCIe-slots, making for less add-on cards

my systems are road systems that travel for Large Scale A/V staging and reliability is a must.

If so, then AMD FirePro W7100 or for 6 outputs, the AMD FirePro W9100, is the obvious choice.

hi benjamin,

i used in the past the 7870, this card was o.k. i deactivated the second graphics core because this config was not working with dataton 4.x and 5.x.

with the availability of atis V8800 i changed all may machines (12 pcs.) to this adapter.

4 outputs and connectivity to the s400 synch boards. more speed (just a feeling), less cpu usage.

i´ve tested also two W7000, runs also smooth with 3d content on all 4 outputs. but i´m happier with the V8800 and W8000.

my systems running also as touring systems and i never had problems with the graphic cards.

you can´t synch the 7970,as i know.

are you happy with the dp hubs?

i never tryed it.

cheers sven

Hi Jan, I realise that the w7000 and 7100 have been discussed previosly but I am looking to spec 4 display pcs with 4 outs . Is the AMD FirePro W5100 4GB Graphics Card a sensible option for 4 outputs running blended video content?

It matches my budget and has four matching connectors which keeps things tidy at the back.

Regards

David

Hi David,

This link compares W7100 and W5100, might be useful to you.

AMD Completes FirePro Refresh, Adds 4 New FirePro Cards August 12, 2014 AnandTech

Best

Ken

Nice comparison from last August, but before the FirePro 7100 was commonly available,

which has since changed.

This means it’s (W5100) targeted towards lower power usage scenarios

where the high compute performance

The higher compute performance is probably not a concern until

3D projectors or virtual displays are among the features used.

and 8GB+ VRAM capacities of the W7100 and higher aren’t needed.

It is not so much the memory size, as it is the memory bus width and speed that matters most to WATCHOUT.

and that is where the 7100 stands out.

It is interesting to note the reference to the W600 in that article as well ... " ... the display wall niche W600 ... "
