arjenmooij
Hi there, Is there a tutorial about how to setup a NDI stream? I want to try to import a NDI stream of a Powerpoint. Greetings Arjen
Member matkeane Posted December 14, 2017 Member Report Share Posted December 14, 2017 Hi, Not a full tutorial... but I downloaded and installed the Newtek NDI tools (https://www.newtek.com/ndi/tools/#download-tools) on my laptop, which allowed me to choose any window as a source for an NDI stream. In Watchout I added an NDI live source, and it detected the active stream on the local network. I dropped the media cue on the timeline and voila... As somebody pointed out in another thread, there are differences with capture card sources - no settings to tweak (that I can see in the NDI software) and, if you pause the source stream, Watchout seems to see it as an inactive stream, and displays nothing - no 'hold on last frame' like the Datapath cards. There are other NDI streaming packages out there though - I haven't tried the Vmix software (https://www.vmix.com/ndi/) yet to see if there are more settings - but the Newtek tools make it ridiculously simple to set something up - I can even stream directly from my After Effects timeline (but I'm not telling clients about that!)
Erik Rönnqvist
Could you please tell under which circumstances you get a black screen when pausing and NDI sender? I have never seen it myself, Watchout has always kept displaying the last frame received during my testing, until you leave the cue, of course. It could be debated which approach is correct, but I think it makes sense for Watchout to handle NDI in the same way as other capture sources. /Erik
Member matkeane Posted December 14, 2017 Member Report Share Posted December 14, 2017 Hi Erik, it was a quick test using the Newtek NDI plugin for Adobe software (Premiere and After Effects) and it's quite possible that there is no video output when a timeline is not active (After Effects seems to only activate the external preview monitor when actually previewing). Also I was looking at the NDI input in the Watchout Production software, not the output from a Display machine, which may also make a difference... so I should probably have done more rigorous tests before jumping to conclusions. Will try and test things more thoroughly soon...
Erik Rönnqvist
Yes, there could be a difference between production and display software (although I have not seen any except for the quality), since they use different streams. For the preview in production software, a low-bandwidth stream with lower resolution and quality is used, if available. This can be good to know if you are looking at NDI in Watchmaker and think the quality is not that good. The reasoning behind this is that preview is nice, but you don't want to waste too much bandwidth on it. /Erik
arjenmooij
Thanks for the replies. I downloaded the NDI tool set and got it working. Looks very promising. Greetings Arjen
Simone
Do NDI work also as output for stream video from watchout to other software? Thanks.
Erik Rönnqvist
No, NDI in Watchout is used for input only. /Erik
mitreklov
I really think you are missing a trick if you don't go all the way and add NDI output functions to Watchout. With NDI in and out, Watchout would become an even more powerful tool for use in IP TV production environments. Some of your competitors have working NDI output functions already. Any plans to add NDI output?
