bgarrett
I was just curious why you suggest not to use Adobe Encoder. I used it for a show last February and it seem ok.

Kalitree
Free video converters have some disadvantages:1. Handbrake only works for ripping dvd's2. Any video converter crashes often and has almost no support. It worth pay some bucks for more professional converter on Mac. For my experience, this is best mac video converter: Kvisoft video converter for Mac. Fast convert speed, easy to use, with powerfully features, no quality loss. Perfect.

Mike Fahl
I've been primarily using FFMpeg lately. It's free, although it has a somewhat arcane UI (command line based). It encodes to most relevant formats, and can do MPEG-2 up to 4k. Mike
screenshaper
I have recently found and liked FFAStrans. It processes watchfolders using ffmpeg, ffmbc (and avisinth for filtering) It's portable (no installation) and reliable. Developed for a national broadcaster. And it's free! http://www.ffastrans.com/
Mike Fahl
Seems like a nice GUI wrapper and workflow tool for ffmpeg. Does it also manage encoding settings through GUI dialogs, or do you have to type the encoding parameters by hand? THose can sometimes be a bit tricky to get right. screenshaper
You can use both ways. Choose predefined settings and filters from simple requesters, or fill-in your turbocharged custom command line for ffmpeg...
